We checked the web before nipping down the M1 for 25 miles to visit the church. We waited between 1.45-2.15pm.The church was closed. We walked around the building to see if there was an entrance we missed but couldn't find one. There doesn't appear to be a website for this church and the phone number listed just rang out.Disappointing.
This was my first visit and it will not be my last. This is a really beautiful Church, not your run of the mill Presbyterian churches at all.So much to look at, lots of interesting stories.I'd highly recommend a visit.
If you want to visit, they told me this place is open from 2pm to 4pm on Wednesdays.Do go, it is very interesting.I had long desired to see inside this place. It was designed by Lanyon, who started Whitehead’s train station, and made Abbeydene House.A very knowledgeable guide told me Lanyon based the exterior of the stair to the tower on a Venetian bridge. One of the paintings on the wall is 110 years old.It was great to see a decorative strip all around the place by William Morris, a friend of Lanyon. The church is filled with genuine relics from ships. There’s a brass steering wheel, still working, salvaged in 1925 from an American ship sunk in 1917 by a u-boat.There’s a great cylinder that houses a ship’s compass. They have a bell from the WWI H.M.S. Hood. The pulpit up in one corner is astonishing, with a model ship’s prow overlooking the congregation. The wood carving, stained glass windows and exterior details are really beautiful and highly distinctive.
We enjoyed our visit to the church on the Sunday of the European Heritage Open day. It was a very different church to any other that I had ever paid a visit to. As soon as we entered the church we were reminded that it was a church for the seamen as all of theof the interior was associated with life on board a ship. The parishioners that were there showing us around were very friendly and did an excellent job answering all our questions.
One of the most unique churches we have visited (and we go into a lot), with amazing decoration/architecture that is all maritime in origin. The people were absolutely great too, so friendly with the children allowing them to play and run around while we visited before services.Honestly a must see if you are nearby as its one of a kind.
