Popped whilst passing. An absolutely beautiful church tucked down a side street. Fantastic wooden pews and great stained glass windows. Friendly welcome at door.
Despite knowing this church within a stone’s throw from St Paul’s Cathedral for many years, I had no idea that it has a lovely courtyard and semi-cloister accessible through a separate door from Foster Lane. This is such a peaceful space, so close to the bustle and noise of the City of London. Well worth a visit.
Without doubt one of London's 10 finest churches, its just immaculate. Reminds me of a Cambridge college chapel in shape and style. Superb carving on the pulpit - Gibbonsesque - , fine reredos and some hidden beautiful plaster work. Do search out the courtyard garden to and find the Epstein on the wall, plus the memorial to the Polish freedom fighter from WWII - now THERE WAS A MAN. So poignant! Recommend you go directly thence to St Stephen Wallbrook and compare and contrast.
An imposing steeple is part of the attractive facade that has impressive stone craft work. Within is attractively embellished while maintaining a tranquil atmosphere. The vista along the open nave is grand, with dark wooden tiered seating on both sides. A triptych with the ten commandments is behind the altar.Towards the rear a grand organ is high over the entrance. Undoubtedly it produces stirring evocative music.
This really is a hidden gem that you can easily walk passed. It is like a different world inside with lovely carving and atmospheric lighting. There is some beautiful stained glass and a lovely collection of mainly 16th century Silver.
